Clock Tower in memory of John O’Connell

Our members may have noticed the recent erection of a clock tower on the clubhouse roof. The clock was acquired by the club in memory of John O’Connell, a well respected tennis player, past club member and former committee member. The addition of the clock is a fitting tribute to John and for those privileged to have known and played tennis with John, the clock tower will serve to remember him and celebrate his life.

John’s family and club member Madeline have sent us the following tribute to John.

John was a member of Hoylake LTC for many years, representing the Club in various tennis leagues, tournaments and events.

He was a talented tennis player in his own right and was happy just to be playing whenever and wherever he could.  He enjoyed social tennis, especially with Tony Walker’s “Thursday Boys” and by encouraging Junior members with his experience and knowledge of the game.

John was also a hard working Committee Member over many years and would make himself available for any working party or similar task.

John was affectionately known for turning up to events at Hoylake LTC  at the last minute, so he would be the first to smile and enjoy the irony of his legacy being used towards a clock!

Thank you to those who came up with the idea of a clock, and to the Committee for following it through. The clock is a wonderful addition to the clubhouse, standing proud on the roof and visible from all corners of the grounds. It is a fitting tribute to John’s love of Hoylake LTC and its members.
