Tony Twemlow

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of former Club Chairman, Tony Twemlow. The following contribution is from Frank Noble….

Those members of Tony’s generation will not need reminding of the great contribution he made to our club. He was, of course, a former Chairman and oversaw the installation of the first artificial turf courts, prior to which he laid out grass courts using arcane instructions from a disintegrating book in the groundsman’s shed.

During his time as Chairman the clubhouse suffered a devastating fire which virtually destroyed it. The aftermath fell to Tony to resolve, namely the rebuilding work and the completion of the season’s commitments, culminating in the finals’ day presentation and social event. These, Tony relocated to his own house.

Having initially set out to follow a career as a chemist, Tony switched to law and became a successful solicitor. The club benefitted greatly from his legal expertise though it could also be exasperating when, more than once, deficiencies in proposals at an AGM were revealed by his perceptive logical scrutiny.

Tony will be remembered with affection and respect. His support for the Club was second to none. An enthusiastic rather than skilful tennis player, those of us of similar standard formed a disrespectfully named “old men’s four” on Sunday mornings. Tony was an ever-present and greatly enhanced our enjoyment of those occasions and our lives at the Club as a whole.

We send our condolences to his wife, Margaret, and his family.
