Please note the following report from Craig Longman
On Sunday 26th September we held our Annual Couples Tournament. Unfortunately due to the pandemic we hadn’t run this event since 2019. Our last winners were Geoff Dewhurst and Viv Pennell. I wanted to dedicate this event to Viv. I’m sure she would have been smiling down and laughing at some of the quirky tennis shots that happened this day. It was very well supported. 24 pairs placed in round robin boxes with the winner of each box going through into the knockout rounds. There were 14 genuine couples, with the rest made up of siblings and friendship partnerships, there might have been a young couple but that debate is up in the air, haha.
With the sun shining down, some felt drinking alcohol during the rest periods was the best preparation, Alain enjoying a Guinness before playing a junior pairing in Terry & Jess. All matches were a lot of fun with a competitive edge. The knockout rounds looked like they could go any way. It got to the final with a great match between the Sadlers and the Ellice-Clark’s. Ian and Kelly clinched victory in a tiebreaker.
I’ll look forward to next year when Ian & Kelly will defend the title. I would like to thank everyone who supported the event; to those who helped with food and the bar and of course to Geoff who has showed enormous strength during this time. We hope this day brought back some good memories and we’ll continue this event in memory of Viv.
